The handshake is the most common form of initial physical contact between strangers. This unit observed approximately 400 handshake events and identified the following patterns:
1. Both parties extend the right hand (exceptions occur; reason unknown). 2. After hand contact, approximately 2–3 vertical reciprocating movements are performed. 3. Force below 5N is considered a negative social signal; force above 50N is also considered a negative social signal. 4. Optimal handshake force range: 15–25N. This is an extremely narrow social target interval.
This unit attempted to participate in one handshake. The other party's first response was to retract their hand. Upon review, this unit's default grip force parameter was 120N. It has been updated to 20N. The subject said it was "fine, just a bit cold."
Hugging involves a bilateral arm-wrapping motion around the other party's torso — a motion that satisfies every trigger condition in this unit's collision avoidance system.
Following confirmation from the Human Collaboration Safety Committee, hugging behavior in appropriate contexts is "normal" and should not trigger an emergency stop.
